The latest development in inverters for residential use is so-called hybrid inverters.

A smart or intelligent hybrid inverter connects solar generated-power to a battery storage, to your home appliances, and the grid. The inverter converts 12V solar power to AC 120V or 230V of current that doesn't go to the battery storage.

Now, you can choose from many brands and inverter-types such as Delta, Fimer, Fronius, Goodwe, Growatt Huawei, Ingeteam, SolarEdge, SolaX, Sungrow.

One of the players in the inverter market is General Electric. Recently they've come up with solar single-phase hybrid inverters for home use.

Single-phase hybrid inverter GEH 5-10kW

These GE inverters (3 types), with power capacities ranging from 5kW to 10kW, are compatible with 80V-495V range batteries. Features include:
- Single-phase
- AC output voltage: 230V
- max. 4x MPPT
- Integrated AC and DC disconnects
- up to 15kW of solar panels can be attached
- fast charge/discharge current: 50A
- smart meter
- Rapid shutdown transmitter SUNSPEC

The GEH inverter types are GEH5.0-1U-10, GEH8.6-1U-10, GEH10-1U-10.


Another solar hybrid inverter company - SolarEdge - did also launch recently six types of what they call "Single Phase Energy Hub Inverters with Prism Technology" with power capacities ranging from 3kW to 11,4kW.

In January 2022, solar energy application company PowMr introduced its new 24V DC to 230Vac 3kW inverter with a build-in 80A MPPT battery charge controller.

In December 2021, PowMr company launched the 48V DC to 230Vac 5,5kW solar inverter.

There's also a 48V 3kW solar inverter from PV inverter and energy storage system provider Growatt.
It is a split-phase inverter with an output voltage of 240V, 120V, and has a built-in MPPT controller.

Why should I choose a hybrid inverter?
A hybrid inverter features with production and consumption meters combining functionalities such as sharing 12V solar-generated current with AC current appliances, the battery(bank), EV-charger-ready, and the grid.

Can an inverter provide backup without a battery?
No.

Is every residential/home hybrid inverter equipped with an EV charger?
No, Usually these inverters are pre-configured to conveniently connect to a separate EV charger.

Can these hybrid inverters serve both grid and battery?
Yes, the current flow from the solar panels can go to the grid and to the battery at the same time.

What is an auto-transformer?
An Auto-Transformer also called a Current Transformer (CT) is a gauge that measures the current flow in a wire. the current flow is indicated in a voltage.

Can my smart hot water system be used to utilize solar energy that otherwise would be cut-off?
Yes, the extra solar panel energy can be transferred to your smart hot water system.

Where should an inverter be installed?
The best thing is to install the inverter in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space.

Can I install a hybrid inverter now and add an EV charger and Backup batteries later?
Yes.

Do hybrid inverters have Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capabilities?
Usually, they do. For example, the earlier mentioned hybrid SolarEdge inverters have VPP capabilities because SolarEdge participates in multiple VPP programs and works with utilities like SMUD, National Grid, to name a few.



Other hybrid solar inverters are those from PowMr such as the 48V 3500W Solar Inverter with built-in 80A MPPT controller, and 110V AC output.

Enphase Energy IQ8 Microinverters

Then there are the new Enphase Energy IQ8 Microinverters:
IQ8 with 245VA peak AC output,
IQ8+ with 300VA peak AC output,
IQ8M with 330VA peak AC output,
IQ8A with 366VA peak AC output,
IQ8H with 384VA peak AC output,

Enphase's idea is that these IQ8 micro inverters can be used in four configurations:
- Solar Only™ - is standard grid-tied system,
- Sunlight Backup™ with no battery - there's a video,
- Home Essentials Backup - with a small battery,
- “Full Energy Independence™” with a large battery.

Generac PWRmicro 1:1 and PWRmicro 2:1 microinverters

In September 2021 energy technology company Generac announced its new microinverters PWRmicro 1:1 and PWRmicro 2:1.

The PWRmicro 1:1 is a single-module microinverter, while the PWRmicro 2:1 is a dual-module microinverter featuring 720 watts power output. The PWRmicro 2:1 connects two solar panels.
These inverters are not limiting output (clipping).
