What Is a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Heater

Traditional fixed-resistance heaters work with wires and coils to generate heat. But a PTC heater element consists of ceramic materials treated with barium titanate, in the form of a white or transparent powder.

These PTC elements can also exist of conductive films/inks printed on thin, flexible polymer-based substrates such as polyester.
This technique is also known as printed electronics.

Another material for PTC elements is Silicium.


Safe.

The characteristics of the material allow the supplemental PTC heater to act as a sensor, eliminating the need for any external feedback controls, and therefore there's no risk of overheating.


Efficient.

PTC heaters use materials that promote the electrical resistance of the material increase when the temperature increases. That's why the current flow decreases.
So, when it is cold, the material lets pass the current flow but limits the passing when the temperature goes up.
Less current flow means less power consumption (watts) which is quite efficient.


Voltage.

There are PTC heaters that either operate on 12V, 24V, 120V, or 240V.
