As Garman - oops, its Garmin, says. always with you the customer in mind designing their products.
Now, Jan. '08, they made an announcement about a set of nüvi navigators designed in particular for those seeking premium navigation features on a large, 5.2-inch touchscreen display.
The navigator was announced as the nüvi 5000 and was displayed at the Garmin International, Inc. booth at the CES show. Garmin International is a member of the Garmin Ltd. group of companies.

The Garmin® nüvi® 5000 - Super-sized GPS navigation as Garmin calls it - is believed ideal for people with larger vehicles that need navigation on a big screen. With the interface and route planning features of the new device there should be more control of the road.

With its large, touchscreen interface, the nüvi 5000 navigator should make it easier to obtain voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions, route calculation, and automatic rerouting if a driver missed directions. Route planning is a easy as the nüvi 5000 will save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the big screen, states Garmin.
Furthermore, it automatically sorts multiple destinations providing the driver with the most direct and efficient route for purposes such as errands, deliveries or sales calls. You can also track where you have been by turning on the track log feature. You'll see then a small trail showing the previously traveled route on the display.
If you want to avoid an area, the nuvi 5000’s routing can be customized by choosing to avoid select roads and areas. The system allows adding custom points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras to the pre-loaded maps, says Garmin.

All routing info is displayed on a digital elevation map that shows detail about the surrounding terrain. The nüvi 5000 also indicates speed limits for major highways and Interstates.

Customers also have the ability to receive dynamic content from either MSN Direct (U.S. only) or FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver.
Users who select the optional MSN Direct receiver get up-to-date traffic information, fuel prices, weather reports, enhanced movie listings, and news and stocks information for major metropolitan areas in the United States.
Customers are also able to plan trips and look up destinations from their computer, via Microsoft Local Live, and then send the locations and routes to their nuvi 5000. Customers who buy the optional FM TMC traffic receiver will receive up-to-date traffic information for metropolitan areas in the United States and select European countries.

Users also have several entertainment options to choose from, such as a built-in MP3 player, audio book player and games. The internal MP3 player lets users browse music by artist, album, song or genre. Music can be loaded onto an SD card and is 'drag-and-drop' easy - there's no special software is required. Another feature is that the Garmin nüvi 5000 navigator is compatible with audible.com, a subscription based audio book service. Also a few games are preloaded on the nüvi 5000 to help car passengers pass the time. According to Garmin there will be more games available in the future at www.garmin.com/games. All music or speech files can be emitted over the vehicle’s existing speakers, through the nüvi 5000’s built-in FM wireless transmitter or via the unit’s 3.5mm stereo output jack. The entertainment audio is muted when navigation instructions are given.

According to Garmin, their nüvi 5000 navigator is expected to be available in North America in February '08 for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of approximately $800. It might be available in Europe in the second quarter of 2008. For more information:garmin.
