This repeater/range extender TL-WAS850RE by TP-LINK became popular quite fast. It is meant to extend router signals to further away areas in and around your house, the socalled 'dead zones'.
Technology and Data Speed:
This range extender uses Wi-Fi technology which is wirelessly transmitting and receiving data by radio waves.
IEEE 802.11n technology is an improved wireless 802.11 standard by using mulitiple transmitter and receiver antennas making it possible to increase data transmission/throughput (MIMO) which makes that you can benefit from it to get smooth HD video, music streaming, doing online gaming and doing phone calls via the internet.
802.11n standard enables wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (= Mega bytes per second). Another indication for this Wi-Fi speed is N300.
With this TL-WA850RE range extender you have compatibility with IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b wireless devices.
Signal Strength Indicator
To show in blue lights what the current strength of the signal is that comes from the router.
The more lights turn blue, the better signal and thus the better signal is transmitted to the extended range area.
There are 5 signal lights and at least 3 three should turn blue in order to have a good location for the extender.
You benefit from this feature by easily finding the best location for this range extender.
It is advised not to place the range extender in direct sunlight or near a heater.
Small Sized and Multi-Functional
Besides its wireless function this wall plug design with WPS set up button, has a LAN port, being a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port (with RJ45 jack).
With this feature you can connect wired devices like your Blu-ray® player, gaming console, DVRs and Internet TV.
This way your connected device is turned into a wireless one and is then part of the wireless network.

In case you have a router without a WPS button, the alternative set up isn't hard to do.
Settings of this repeater will not get lost when changing from router, as its profile function will store it.
So you don't have to reset the device in such a case.
The used frequency or wavelength is 2.4GHz, to be exact: 2.4~2.4835GHz , and you'll benefit from data speeds of up to 300 Mbps with the
802.11n standard, in case an 802.11g device speeds are up to 54 MBps and up to 11 Mbps in case of 802.11b device.
- speeds: 11n: Up to 300Mbps (dynamic), 11g: Up to 54Mbps (dynamic), 11b: Up to 11Mbps (dynamic)
With this repeater device you also have mulitiple encryption security including 64/128/152-bit WEP and WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK.
Wireless router and Microsoft® Windows® 98SE, NT, 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 7, 8, Mac® OS, NetWare®, UNIX® or Linux.

The nice and small design, featuring up-to-date controls such as the signal strength lights to determine best location, the WPS button for easy set up, no extra wiring needed, just plug in a wall socket and ofcourse the relatively inexpensive price.
It is hard to say what cons there are exactly, but one is that the extender might be somewhat slow when there are many large files be transfered wirelessly.
For some users it took time to set up the extender when they were not able to that with just pushing the button.
Others experience connection drops.
The rating is good, however one third of online reviews are negative for whatever reason, but on the contrary that leaves two third of people that are very positive about this popular range extender.
As said before, this range extender has a relatively inexpensive price, that is together with its design, probably the reason that so many people buy this product.
This appears to be a good product for mamy people in for most situations it is meant for.
But as with many things in live, it may not meet everyone's expectations. People are in different situations, have different settings of their router or other devices may be hindering good performance.
If such happens to you - no matter what wireless network it concerns - see also the Wi-Fi problems page.
But overall, I think this product is most suitable for people who want also browse the internet in socalled 'dead signal zones'' of their home.
